Bog Birch is a hardwood that has been buried in peat bogs for approximately 1,000 years. This is similar, but different from the black bog oak wood we see from areas like the Ukraine. The wood absorbs minerals from the bog as it ages. While the heartwood is a dark brown the sapwood tends to be lighter in color. The whorl shape for this spindle is a variation on the usual stiletto design. It has been elongated to make it more dramatic.
