A naturally colored piece of moose antler makes the bottom portion of the whorl, while the top layer is a beautiful piece of mystery wood burl. Moose antler is harder to acquire outside of the northern areas where these animals live and the large paddle shaped antlers are quite impressive. Antlers of male animals in the deer family (Cervidae) are regrown and shed each year. As they grows it turns into bone. The internal portion of antlers has areas called marrow and when finished it produces a really interesting effect that resembles granite.

*Counter balance "beauty marks" (these serve to balance out any natural wood density differences and are necessary in about 75% of all spindles made)
