Camatillo, also called Mexican Kingwood, is a really beautiful and hard to acquire hardwood. It is under strict international trade regulations and hard to source in the United States. Camatillo is extremely dense and treasured for an intense purple color with and stripes of black and dark brown. It is a true rosewood and arguably one of the finest woods of the dalbergia family. This wood is hard on turning tools and has enough color pigment to dye my fingers and polishing rags a color somewhere between fuschia rose and burgundy. It is quite lovely and one of my all time favorites to work with.
*Counter balance "beauty marks" (these serve to balance out any natural wood density differences and are necessary in about 75% of all spindles made). Inconsistencies in this heavy wood required multiple copper counterbalance weights.
This support spindle is crafted to be more than a tool—it is a true partner in the gentle art of hand spinning. Balanced, remarkably quick and with a glossy finish, it moves with effortless ease, spinning smoothly and steadily as fiber transforms beneath your fingers.
Designed to feel wonderful in the hand, its graceful form offers both comfort and control, inviting you into the quiet rhythm of the process. The swift, responsive spin allows twist to enter your fiber quickly, making each moment feel fluid and intentional without any waiting for the spindle.
Thoughtfully designed, carefully made, and deeply satisfying to use, this spindle turns the simple act of spinning fiber into a luxurious, mindful experience—graceful, delightful and full of possibility.
